Every camera owner should also have a lens cleaning kit. But for those times when, for one reason or another, you cannot have your kit on hand, use these tips to help clean your camera lens.

A camera lens cleaning kit is a worthy investment. You know that you will be able to clean your camera’s lens without damaging anything. The alternative to a good kit for less than 20 dollars can be a 3,000 dollar new lens.

But sometimes, you don’t have a kit. Maybe you’re a first time camera owner and you didn’t think of getting a lens cleaning kit, but now your lens got smudged. Maybe you forgot to take a kit with you on your trip, and your lens has dust in it. Maybe your kit’s cloth got too dirty or you ran out of cleaning solution. There is a way to safely clean your lens if you can’t wait until you return home.

  • When you don’t have the special cloth to clean your lens, use the cleanest and softest cloth you have available, such as a cotton hankerchief, a clean baby diaper or a clean cotton shirt. If you wear glasses, you may have a basic eyeware clean and repair kit- and these usually include a microfiber cloth, perfect for cleaning your camera lens. Whatever you choose to use, gently wipe the lens in a circular motion. Remember to only use facial tissue as a last resort. If you do have to use it, make sure it is clean and free of any oils or lotions. Adding a drop of water to the tissue may help.
  • When you don’t have a soft brush to clean out dirt, gently turn the camera so the lens faces the ground and blow softly. If the dirt is still there, try to blow a little harder.

These two steps should be sufficient enough to clean your camera lens until you can purchase a kit or use yours. Don’t try to put water on the lens or use any type of cleaning solution unless intended for camera lenses- including the solution found in an eyeware clean and repair kit. If possible, it is best to wait until you have a real cleaning kit to cleanse your camera lens.
