Do you remember being curious about magnets as a kid? If you’ve had experiences similar to mine, you probably wondered why the darned things weren’t stronger! But alas, I had never known or heard of rare earth magnets; they’re used in everything from your computer hard drive to your headphones.

Rare earth magnets can be purchased in a variety of shapes, from flat discs to cylindrical eggs to spheres, and even in some rather unique shapes, such as the heart shaped ones seen above. All that’s fine and dandy, what’s with the war? Well, in the past few years a number of companies have released DIY magnetic sphere puzzles, and the article compares the most popular choices available.  If you’ve never heard about them, you’ll probably be fishing for your credit card by the end of it; if you have, you should hopefully find a viable option to choose from.

So what exactly makes them fun you ask? Imagine over a hundred magnetic balls that have the capability to be stuck end on end as if they were a string of beads,  or a few fifty forming a racecar, or a couple of hundred forming a  Icosahedron..

I’ll be comparing BuckyBalls, CyberCubes, NeoCubes and ZenMagnets.

Things to Consider Before Buying

Coated/Uncoated

Colored spheres that have a silver, gold or nickel plating which might come off due to heavy usage and could possibly be toxic. The NeoCube website in fact recommends discontinuation of usage if the coating starts chipping, so consider buying one without a coated/colored exterior.

Size

The size of the spheres, although minute, is of importance in the various design possibilities and general consistency; all that I’ve read suggests that Zen spheres are the most precise in terms of size. Zen itself recently ran an article on it, although it’s them rating themselves, so take it with a pinch of salt.

Oh and the spheres are a health hazard if ingested, if you do buy one take care that it’s kept safely away from kids and pets.

Pricing

Here’s a rundown of what it costs per magnet based on the number of units and price, note this is including the packaging but minus the shipping and without taking into account any coupon discounts.

BuckyBalls Original: $0.13 (216)
BuckyBalls Coated: $0.16 (216)

CyberCube Coated Tins: $0.12 (224)
CyberCube Blue Box: $0.13 (224)
CyberCube Green Box: $0.10 (343)

NeoCube Mini: $0.47 (27)
NeoCube Alpha: $0.11 (224)
NeoCube Cubetastic: $0.11 (251)
NeoCube Gold: $0.15 (224)
NeoCube Omega: $0.08 (1078)

Zen Magnets Mini: $0.13 (72)
Zen Magnets Zen Set: $0.11 (222)
Zen Magnets Mandala: $0.10 (1736)

Shipping

BuckyBalls and NeoCube are inflexible on shipping prices; prices are completely pre-determined for NeoCube and show little variation for BuckyBalls. CyberCube and Zen Magnets prices varied based on quantity and location; I found CyberCube shipping to be higher in all cases in comparison to Zen, though both being more reasonable than BuckyBalls or NeoCube.

Conclusion

Neodymium cubes are an indispensable desktop utility that are here to stay; they make for one helluva a conversation starter and (probably) result in hundreds of hours of lost productivity. Are they worth it? If you ask me, I plan to eventually buy the Mandala.
